The Locator Awareness Training course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills about current legislation and their fundamental duty of care for locating underground utilities, before the commencement of any excavation works.
Underground pipes and cables carry vital services such as water, electricity, communications and gas. It is essential to identify existing underground utilities before commencing a job to save time and ensure a safe work environment.
Identifying and locating underground utilities requires the work to be well-planned and safely carried out according to site procedures and State or Territory legislative requirements, including obtaining necessary permits, approvals, and DBYD plans. Safety is of prime concern to all working in identifying and locating underground utilities. Workers must at all times during operations be aware of their responsibilities for worker safety and to protect the environment.
Dial Before You Dig Plans will be use and the trainer will provide a demonstration using a locating device such as a cable avoidance tool to search for known or potential services or utilities inclusive of Telstra, Electrical, Optic Fibre, etc. which may exist under the surface of the training location.
Procedures, controls and emergency response requirements for those hazards present at the site, determined through risk assessment, are to be reinforced throughout the training sessions.
